Diagnostic Testing

Click A Tutor’s diagnostic testing provides a complete analysis of students’ proficiency in Math and English.  Diagnostic testing allows teachers to build upon student’s knowledge and abilities rather than a predetermined grade appropriate academic profile.  Our online diagnostic testing not only assesses students’ current skills, but assists in preparing students for state standards testing.  Click A Tutor offers four different forms of diagnostic testing:

▪  Curriculum Evaluation Tests:  These tests represent the initial step in a four tiered assessment process.  Aligned with our grade appropriate online curriculum, curriculum evaluation tests examine essential skills in Math and English.  The system analyzes each student’s performance and offers immediate remediation by linking to sections corresponding to students’ incorrect answers.  Students can use the evaluation tests independently to isolate basic deficiencies before attempting a more detailed assessment.

▪  Math & English Placement Exams:  This entirely paper based form of assessment isolates 96 distinct skills in Math and English.  After students complete the paper exam, teachers score it using our scope and sequence guide.  Each small section within the test corresponds with a unique set of skills, while a simple raw score determines skill proficiency.  Through this test, teachers obtain a complete academic profile of their students.

▪  Grade Level Academic Assessment Tests:  Once individual problem areas have been addressed, teachers can receive a detailed, computer generated grade level evaluation of students’ abilities.  This exhaustive software includes tests in Math, English and Science for grades 3-9.  While most assessment programs are burdened by extensive animation, these programs represent only the essential elements necessary to communicate the information.  Due to the programs efficiency and economy of size, several complete assessment programs can be stored on a floppy disk.

▪  State Standards Comprehensive Achievement Tests:  Designed solely for high school students, these tests gauge students’ preparedness heading into state high school standard testing.  Using our online test analysis, teachers and students can review the procedures and strategies necessary to solve each problem.  Once students have achieved a passing score in this final step, they are well prepared to take and pass state standards testing.

Overcoming Language Barriers

Click A Tutor is dedicated to making the finest online curriculum available to every student, regardless of their native language or reading ability.  Every topic page in our curriculum can be read aloud by selecting the narration icon.  This feature makes every page within the system accessible to students in lower grade levels.  By selecting one of eight different foreign languages, students can access a word for word translation of the entire site.  When used jointly, students can read the material in their native language while listening along in English.

▪  Online Narration:  Every curriculum page within the system is accompanied by a narration option that reads the text aloud to students.  This feature allows students with reading difficulties to keep up with their classmates as they bolster their reading skills.  In fact, as students follow along with the narration; they often begin to associate spoken words with their written counterparts.  In time, students begin to build upon their vocabulary by utilizing the feature.

▪  Curriculum Translation:  Schools must often instruct students who do not understand English.  Rather than purchasing alternative curriculum or diminishing the level of content, schools can assign translated work through Click A Tutor.  Our online software provides a literal, word for word translation available in eight languages.  Students can select the narration option to associate English words with the foreign equivalent.

▪  Learning to Read:  Click A Tutor features a program called Academy One which begins to associate letters with the sounds they make.  Beginning with basic sounds, students soon build an extensive vocabulary of similarly sounding words.  Created in a video game format, Academy One introduces reading in a fun, interactive way.

▪  English As A Second Language:  This feature is dependent on a student’s fluency with understanding spoken English.  Students lacking proficiency in this area are invited to read through the curriculum in their native language while listening to English through the narration option.  Once comfortable with the spoken word, students can access over one hundred different basic phonics exercises.  Accompanied by flash cards, these exercises begin to teach students the fundamental principles of sounding out words.

Liquid Library

Click A Tutor has partnered with the Liquid Library to connect students to over 450 digital books.  With over one hundred of these books considered classics, the Liquid Library eliminates the need for many expensive classroom sets.  Our electronic books enable students to make highlights, create bookmarks or write notes within the digital pages.  Rather than borrowing a book, the book instead becomes the students’ own intellectual property.

▪  Hundreds of Online Books:  The Liquid Library is composed of over 450 digitized books divided into age appropriate categories.  From beginning reader books to timeless classics, the Liquid Library contains material for every reading level and interest.  With a wide selection of classical literature, the Liquid Library removes the necessity for many classroom sets.  This also eliminates the need for teachers to worry about students bringing back assigned books or their condition upon return.

▪  Student Ownership:  Students can download digital versions of each book on the site, choosing to save it on a floppy disk or their computer.  Rather than discouraging students from writing or marking in the books, teachers can encourage students to highlight important passages and write insightful comments within the margins.  The electronic book application will even link students’ highlights and notes in a caption box on the left side of the page.  This form of analysis prepares students for college level work and fosters a sense of ownership with the book’s contents.   With students’ commentary and custom-made bookmarks, the book becomes the student’s personal intellectual property.

▪  Teacher Editions:  Teachers can also create an individualized novel containing important notes and highlighted passages.  By distributing an altered version, teachers can provide a crucial narrative to the book as students read.  In this manner, teachers can direct student attention to important themes or literary devices to prepare students for an upcoming test.  Click A Tutor also provides detailed plot synopses and background information on many of these books in our English Literature section.

Online Curriculum

Click A Tutor as over 45,000 pages of curriculum on the website.  Teachers can use these pages in any combination to create online lesson plans for their students.  Rather than being tethered to their classroom textbook or subject, teachers can incorporate any topic into their lesson plan.   Students can access online curriculum through two course directories on the student home page.  Each topic based section, similar to chapters in a textbook, contains a printable ‘Test Yourself’ study guide and an interactive comprehensive test.

▪  Online Curriculum:  Students can access our curriculum through two directory guides which organize courses by subject and recommended grade level.  Each subject is divided into separate courses and the courses are segmented into individual topics.  This arrangement is designed to mirror the alignment of most textbooks.  Recommended grade levels are determined by surveying most states’ standards for student advancement. Each distinct course or chapter also contains a self study guide and a random comprehensive test.

▪  Teacher Lesson Plans:  Using our extensive inventory of curriculum pages, teachers can create an online lesson plan that aligns with their classroom curriculum.  Click A Tutor’s designed flexibility allows teachers to dictate the content, sequence and goals of each lesson.  Teachers can use these plans to supplement classroom activity or highlight topics not found within the textbook.  Rather than being restricted to a single textbook, teachers have access to textbooks from every subject and grade level.

▪  Comprehensive Tests:  Each course includes a comprehensive test that quickly examines students’ mastery of the curriculum.  Comprehensive tests randomly select questions from a pool of questions based on the course’s content.  This makes the probability of students taking the same exam twice very unlikely.  Test results are stored within the system and are made accessible to teachers through their home page.  Teachers can use these tests to assess students’ effort with their homework.

▪  Curriculum Search Engine:  A search box resides in each section within the directory.  Using this search engine, students can explore the entire system with a click of a button.  The curriculum search feature can assist students researching a single topic or an entire subject.

Online Tutoring

▪  Professional Tutoring:  Our site offers many options for professional tutoring.  First, students can access an exhaustive depository of frequently asked questions.  If their question does not appear in this listing, they can email their problem to a member of our staff.  Once sent, it takes no longer than 24 hours to furnish a complete reply.   Click A Tutor can also set up a whiteboard and self tutorial system for an entire school.  The whiteboard allows students and teachers to communicate concepts that require geometrical drawings or detailed illustrations.  Using the tutorial chat room feature attached to the whiteboard, teachers can narrate events that take place after normal school hours.  Schools can also set up live homework centers that assist students in certain areas at scheduled times.
